Thermoplastic marking material is a type of thermoplastic coating that is applied in a molten or liquid state, usually at elevated temperatures, and solidifies as it cools. 1. Composition

  • Resins: The primary binder that holds the paint together and adheres to the road surface. Typically, synthetic resins are used to provide good adhesion and resistance to wear.

  • Pigments: Commonly titanium dioxide (for white markings) and lead-free pigments for yellow road markings. These pigments provide the bright colors needed for visibility and road safety.

  • Glass Beads: Retro-reflective beads are embedded in the paint to enhance visibility, especially at night or in low-light conditions. These beads reflect headlights back to the driver, improving road safety.

  • Fillers: Materials like calcium carbonate, silica, or other minerals are added to improve the physical properties of the paint, such as its texture, durability, and wear resistance.

How To Apply Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint:

Steps:

1. Surface Preparation:

  • Clean the Area: Sweep or use a pressure washer to clean the surface where the thermoplastic marking will be applied. The area should be free of debris, oil, dust, or loose material to ensure a good bond.
  • Dry the Surface: After cleaning, allow the surface to dry completely. Any moisture can affect the adhesion and longevity of the markings.

2. Heating the Thermoplastic Material:

  • Solid Form: If you are using solid thermoplastic, heat it in a specialized melting pot (usually gas or electric-heated) to the appropriate temperature. This is typically around 375–400°F (190–200°C). Ensure that the material is fully melted and has a smooth, consistent texture.
  • Liquid Form: If using thermoplastic in liquid form, follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding heating.

3. Marking the Area:

  • Apply the Thermoplastic: Pour or spread the melted thermoplastic material onto the prepared surface. If you're marking a road or parking lot, you can use a roller, squeegee, or even a specialized road-marking machine (like an airless sprayer or a striper) to apply the material.
  • Work Quickly: Since thermoplastic material cools and hardens rapidly, you need to work fast. Aim for a uniform thickness, typically between 1/16” and 1/8” thick, depending on the application.

4. Forming the Marking Design:

  • If you are creating specific designs (such as lines, logos, or symbols), you may need stencils or templates to guide the application. Ensure that the stencils are properly aligned before you start applying the material.
  • Use a Roller or Brush: To smooth and even out the marking, use a roller or brush while the material is still hot and malleable.

5. Cooling and Curing:

  • Allow to Cool: Let the thermoplastic material cool down and harden. This typically takes around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the temperature and thickness of the material.
  • Check the Durability: Ensure the markings have fully adhered to the surface and are durable enough to withstand traffic.

6. Post-Application Care:

  • Reapply if Necessary: If the marking looks uneven or thin, you may need to apply an additional layer once the first layer has cooled.
  • Traffic Opening: After sufficient cooling time, you can open the area to traffic, typically within 1 hour of application.
