Thermoplastic road marking paint is a type of high-performance, durable paint specifically designed for road markings such as lane lines, pedestrian crossings, and other traffic-related markings. It is called "thermoplastic" because the material is in solid form at room temperature but becomes liquid or semi-liquid when heated to a high temperature (usually 375°F–400°F or 190°C–200°C). Once applied, it cools and solidifies, creating a tough and long-lasting marking on the road surface.

Common Applications:

  • Roads and Highways: Lane lines, edge lines, crosswalks, and other traffic markings.
  • Parking Lots: For marking spaces, driveways, and lanes.
  • Airports: For runway, taxiway, and ramp markings.
  • Pedestrian Areas: Crosswalks and other safety markings in urban environments.

How It Works:

  1. Pre-Application: The surface where the marking will be applied is cleaned, usually with a broom or pressure washer, to remove dirt, debris, and any other contaminants that could hinder adhesion.
  2. Heating: The thermoplastic paint is heated in a special machine, typically a melting pot or a heated application machine, to a temperature where it becomes liquid and flowable.
  3. Application: The liquid thermoplastic paint is applied using a roller, squeegee, or machine striping equipment. The material is spread over the surface to the desired thickness.
  4. Cooling and Hardening: After application, the thermoplastic paint begins to cool rapidly and harden, forming a durable and solid marking.
  5. Finishing Touches: Reflective glass beads can be added during or immediately after application to enhance night-time visibility.

Considerations:

  • Environmental Conditions: Applying thermoplastic paint during rain or freezing temperatures can affect its curing and adherence.
  • Surface Texture: Smooth asphalt or concrete surfaces are ideal for thermoplastic marking adhesion. Rough or uneven surfaces may require special preparation or additional layers of primer.
